Best clothing for Alaska fishing and hunting

Has any one seen the prices for a good rain coat nowadays? $300-450 just for the coat!! Basically the price of a new gun or a high end fly rod. Is it really worth it? The only way you can really answer that question is if you spend a week in the rain, cold, and wind. You’ll be sitting on a beaver dam glassing for moose wishing you had spent the extra $200 on that KUIU rain coat. Wet shoulders, elbows, knees, or butt. This is your first sign that you screwed up and are about to hate your life for the next 6 days. I can’t stress enough the importance of quality rain gear, or light weight, warm, synthetic clothing. Companies like KUIU, Sitka, and Simms seem to have this on lock down. You have to really think about what can make or break your hunt or fishing trip and you can really narrow the list down to a few items when you think about it. Sleeping bag, tent, foot wear and clothing. Everything else can be mediocre and you can still walk away completely satisfied. Stay away from cotton, and stick to synthetics or synthetic blends. Wool will still keep you warm if it gets wet, but is heavy and takes up a lot of space. Synthetic down or hydrophobic down is absolutely the best thing since sliced bread. Extremely warm, light weight and very packable. All this of course comes with a price tag that might leave a knot in your gut the size of Texas, but it’s worth every penny. How does that saying go, “buy right, buy once.” I’m a firm believe in that and I only buy the best when it comes to my clothing gear.

In my opinion, the best clothing for Alaska fishing and hunting is the KUIU Yukon rain coat and pant. It is by far the most important part of clothing gear I own. I can spend all day in the field in pouring rain and as long as I button down all the hatches, and tighten my hood strap, I’ll be dry. It always amazes me when I take my coat off and my under clothing is dry to the touch. With a price tag of just over $700 for the pair, it’s on the pricy side, but worth its weight in gold. It also comes with a great warranty which will cover any manufacture defects. My favorite features are the adjustable seal around the wrist cuff, the ability to breath, waterproof zippers and lots of waterproof pockets for all your gear.
